history
The Bank of Anna was started in 1899 as a private bank with the private ownership of David W. Carraker, John B. Jackson, Dr. William Lence, and Pleasant T. Chapman. On July 24, 1900, the Anna National Bank received its Charter and assumed the business of the Bank of Anna.
The original paid-in-capital of the bank in 1900 was $25,000.00. In 1913, that increased to $50,000.00. Today total capital exceeds 11 million.
The Anna National Bank's main location has remained on the same corner since 1900. During the bank's early years, it occupied a small office on Main Street that was a part of the 1st floor of the Miller Opera House. In 1911, the bank purchased the building from the Miller estate and expanded into the entire first floor. The second floor was converted into offices, and the third floor remained the local dance hall.
In 1950, a major renovation took place. Air conditioning was installed for the comfort of the customers and employees. Very little changed until 1987, when the adjacent Walter Hardware Building was purchased and demolished for the construction of our new facility. In 1990 our new facility was dedicated at 201 S. Main Street.
Anna National Bank has always been a local leader when it comes to improved services. In 1978 a multi-lane, Drive-In Facility was constructed on the east edge of town. Several years later, ATMs were added at each location to serve the needs of all customers. Until just recently, Anna National Bank was the only local institution offering Automated Banking Services.
A meeting of the Shareholders of the Anna National Bank was conducted February 23, 1987, with a vote being taken to form a single Bank Holding Company. The vote was approved and on April 20, 1987 the formation of Union County Bancshares was complete.
